Their new study appears in this winter's issue of Human Factors, the quarterly journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society...

I don't think it's a bad thing to talk on the cell in less-populated areas like superhighways, but in city limits or suburbs -- very bad. I've become a defensive pedestrian. I assume that the guy is going to make a right turn right into me.

I actually think the drunk driving refence is much more in line, since its also about attention, not just reflex. I hate cell phone drivers. i got rear ended by one in an SUV once. He was nice and took full responsibility, and we were not going fast so no harm done, but seriously. I doubt people are that busy that they need to talk while they drive. They managed to not do that for decades, why start now. I've noticed that its usually mindless dribble anyways, and if someone has a serious call wouldn't they want to make it from somewhere where they can concentrate on the actual conversation? Driving and cells lead to both suffering. I know someone that would always call me while driving and the convesation were so distracting and boring that i finally yelled at her to call me when she wants to actually talk, and not just use my time to pass her boring commute. Anyhow, now we're much better, and love to talk on the phone (well not me since I hate phones in general) but never while driving. And it really does affect driving. Does anyone here talk on the phone alot while driving? why do you do it? Just cause you're bored? or business? Or time-table problems (you happen to be commuting at the only other time someone is available to talk because they live in a different time zone, etc)? Just wondering.

stupid stupid stupid. conversations? lets ban talking to each other in a car then shall we? i admit cell phones are dangerous .. avoid their use as much as we can. i have litte isuees with hands free phones though cause to me, they're the same as talking to a person on a passenger seat. but you know what, i feel safer with a cell phone in my hand than even a tad bit tipsy.

I have the same problem as Dolce: a friend who calls to pass the time on his commute. But it's a predictable time and not so often and he uses a handset, so I don't mind so much. However, if he stops to get out or talks to someone else, I hang up on him. I don't think it's a bad thing to talk on the cell in less-populated areas like superhighways, but in city limits or suburbs -- very bad. I've become a defensive pedestrian. I assume that the guy is going to make a right turn right into me.

I'm one of those people who calls during a long commute All I gotta say is that you have to exercise common sense: use a headset; don't get into fights on the phone; make sure you're not in the left lane, etc.
