BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR, Miles Teller

Oh, how is this breakthrough then? He's been in quite a few movies. It's certainly not his most successful film financially. He's also not getting nominated for awards for it. What's your reasoning for this? I mean, I think it could be breakthrough going by my definition of the category. But yours wouldn't allow it. Divergent is the biggest film he's in. Maybe we should nominate him for Breakthrough for that? He was even already nominated for a KJ award for Best Supporting Actor for the film Rabbit Hole.

I've never seen him before until I watched Whiplash. So he's broken through to my level of movies. Divergent was 2014, too, so that kind of proves that 2014 was his breakthrough year...HENCE THE NOMINATION. ;)

Rosamund Pike has been around since 2002. That's twelve fucking years!

This is by far her biggest role and her best performance. I've always liked her but she blew me away here. Most of her other performances are all smaller roles. An Education, Die Another Day, Pride & Prejudice, etc... Gone Girl is her breakthrough into the mainstream and her ticket to being a household name on the A-list. She was mostly a nobody before this. Doesn't matter that she's been working for 12 years. This is, without question, her breakthrough.

You're a moron.

So you've never seen Rabbit Hole, 21 & Over, Project X, Footloose (the remake), The Spectacular Now, That Awkward Moment, or Divergent? This was the first time you'd seen him? And by that logic just because you weren't familiar with him you're saying it's ok to have him as breakthrough? So a person can nominate for breakthrough as they see fit? That's what I thought.

Technically, the last 2 movies also came out in 2014 and would be included in his "breakout" resume.

Correct, and those movies are hardly big or well-respected movies. This is his first notable performance.

I had seen Divergent, but he's not the main character at all. If someone makes a few years of supporting roles without getting much appreciation but then makes an Oscar calibre film where his performance is recognised, I would say that makes it a breakthrough performance, but notice how I said "few years", not twelve. ;) I've now said all I have to say on the matter and you are ridiculous for including Pike. But go ahead, hopefully common sense will prevail and nobody else will vote for her, so it will be a wasted vote from you.

His roles in 21 & Over, The Spectacular Now, and That Awkward Moment are not supporting roles and his performance in The Spectacular Now was also acclaimed, as was the film. But whatever.

CALVARY

For your consideration in the following categories:
BEST PICTURE
BEST DIRECTOR, John Michael McDonagh
BEST ACTOR, Brendan Gleeson
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
FUNNIEST COMEDY OF THE YEAR

What do the critics say:

89% on Rotten Tomatoes..

"Thanks to writer-director John Michael McDonagh's powerhouse script and Brendan Gleeson's superb central performance, Calvary earns its sour stripes -- it's a bruising beauty of a film." - Matt Brunson, Creative Loafing

"Gleeson provides an emotional anchor with an understated portrayal that balances strength and vulnerability." - Todd Jorgenson, Cinemalogue.com

What do I say:

"Please, just watch it before voting. I urge you to watch it. It's a delightful and powerful black comedy with a fantastic script. If, after watching, you don't think it's worthy of any WOKJ awards, then at least you've just had a great two hours watching it. It really is the most overlooked film this year."

THE RAID 2: BERANDAL

For your consideration in the following categories:
BEST FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM
BEST EDITING

What do the critics say:

79% on Rotten Tomatoes..

"The last half hour alone ranks it as one of the best martial arts films ever made." - Stephen Danay, Under the Radar

"This time, the action scenes spring organically from the narrative, which makes them richer and more urgent." - Will Leitch, Deadspin

What do I say:

"This sequel is fantastic. It's a two-and-a-half hour action feast, and while it starts slow, it improves with each set piece until the end where it hits masterpiece level. If there was an award for choreography or stunts, no other film would bother challenging Berandal"

THE EXPENDABLES 3

For your consideration in the following category:
BEST ENSEMBLE

What do the critics say:

"An A-team of B-stars in a vanity project on steroids." - Brian Gibson, Vue Weekly

What do I say:

"The action cast of a lifetime. Since there will not be another Expendables film, we should honour the franchise and finally award it the ensemble praise it deserves."
