I'm glad to see so many Risk enthusiasts on the forum. As I'm burning some time until my friend calls me back, I'm curious about everyone's opinions on the game. What's your favorite continent in the classic map? What's your least favorite? What's your strategy? When you attack, what kind of odds do you prefer? Etc.
My favorite continent is N. America. It is somewhat hard to take, but very easy to defend; all three entry points funnel in (Alaska, Greenland, and Central America). That's only three entry points for a continent worth five bonus troops. Plus, if any player does break you, the countries are placed so oddly (again, the funneling) that it is much more difficult to take it out in on turn than a continent like Europe. I don't really like Europe to much, at least to start off with. It's to exposed. Europe is a great, say, third continent. In an ideal game, I'd take S. America and move to N. America, than Europe. But to start off with, Europe is really horrible. I don't like Australia either. It's asy to take and easy to hold, but if that's your starting area, than you're screwed. You can't move anywhere out of Australia, unless you intend on taking Asia. Good luck with that, since by the time you have the forces to take Asia, there's usually already different power bases in Africa, Europe, and North America, leaving Asia as the last remaining battleground. As for Africa....don't get me started. In my games with friends, I always end up with Africa. Somehow. It's usually never my starting strategy (like I said, I'd prefer the Americas) but it seems luck or fate leaves me with Africa. Africa is a decent place to start with, don't get me wrong - especially if you don't play with a Middle East/East Africa connection because then there are only two entrance countries to guard and you gain three troops per turn for it - but usually different players have Europe and S. America. Meaning there's usually two forces - one in W. Europe, and the other in Brazil, that are equal to my force in N. America. So not only are the two bets places to move after taking Africa already taken, but even if I tried to break either of those countries, there's another strong force waiting to break my continent after I weaken myself. So if I took my army of 20 and tried to break an army of 15 in Brazil, then the army of 15 in W. Europe would come down through North Africa and take out a huge chunk of my continent.
As for strategy, I try to outnumber any opposing army of 8 or less at 1 plus twice that army size. So if they have 4, I'd like to have 9. If they have 6, I like 13. Dice tend to work against me at all times, so that's more caution that strategy.
Well, I'd love ot rant some more, but he finally called me. Hopefully everyone joins a game and plays at some point. It's tonnes of fun.

I like North America too. My friends like to use the mission cards, because it's quite interesting.
Australia can be crucial, and can sometimes be a good foundation. I find myself spreading to Africa if I'm in a bad spot like that. North Eastern Asia is also good. More territories.

Can't say much as only played 6 times altogether (3 times on board, 3 times online).
Love to play it though, that's for sure.

1. Played a lot in college... We changed the continent values slightly, to even it out.. SA was worth one more, 3?.. As was Asia.. Favorite strategty was to sit on Indonesia..
2. MBA story- the pieces were first made from wood, using the cut-out eye-hole of paint brushes... Free scrap.. The supplier began to make more selling the pieces than his brushes.. They stopped making brushes and made game pieces.. Accounting wise a catastrophy... Out of business to cheaper plastic pieces... I prefer the wood...
3. There's a RISK game in the Tennebaum's closet...

I rarely get to play with anyone with enough patience to actually finish the game. And if I do get people to play with me, they are always sore losers. If they had any sort of stradegy they wouldn't lose every game. So my stradegy changes each time I play. I always try tofind things that work better. Like sommi, the dice tend to work against me. Unless I'm so bored of the game that I want to lose so that I can go do something else. Then they're suddenly my friend.
So normally when I do play, I play with my two brothers, my sister and our friend Ray. One brotheris obsessive over Australia and never makes any attempt to actually take over any other continent. The other brother always attempts to take asia first, while ranodmly attacking different players on different continents, just to be an ass. My sister is extremely dumb and hasn't the slightest clue what to do, as with any game. So naturally everyone tries to gang up on her and get her out of the game so we don't have to worry about her. About 50% of the time, she used to get mad and throw the whole gameboard across the room in anger. Now we've learned to restrain her before that happens. I would prefer to start with North America, or even South america and work my way into North America usually, and then work my way east. But of course Ray makes that difficult. He has aNorth America obsession much like my brother does with Australia. So I end up with South America, Africa and Europe pretty easily because no one cares about them. Then as I take those continents, I do my best to prevent Asia to be taken overby my brother, which frustrates him greatly. He realizes that I half way know what I'm doing and if I weren't there he'd easily win, so he doesn't like playing with me much.
Has anyone played the futuristic version? I forget what the actual name is but there are moon and water territories. Everyone alwaysforgets the moon exists because it's not on the actually game board, it's a seperate piece. So it's very easy to quietly take the whole moon while no one is even aware of it.
I don't think I've ever actually played the game with people that aren't total morons.

Sign up too and play with us then. If you have experience with total morons, we fit that profile.
The more players, the merrier.

I may, but at the moment it's 7 am, and I haven't gone to bed yet. So right now I have to sleep and then go to work. Perhaps when I get off work.

Katie,
I added your scores chart to the first post, if you update it in the thread, i'll update the first post. Also, would it be possible to add a total games played column?

I just noticed that one of the site's rules is "no secret alliances" so I guess I should stop sending PMs to everyone making deals behind the scenes. The site considers that cheating...

The dice are broken. I swear. I mean, technically they are random, but it seems like it constantly sways into and then WAY out of my favor. There are times when I rip through a continent and lose two troops, and then there are the time when I attack one troop with ten and can't take the country. It's so confusing.
The worst single roll for me has actually happened several times, and even a handful of times in real life. I lost to a defending 1.1. Yes. I rolled three ones. And the defender rolled two. I was flabbergasted.
