Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sets sail in Japan on 800 screens with an outstanding 1.52 billion yen ($18.57 million), including the Friday opening. 93% of which came from it's record opening on 640 3D screens.
The gross is about 22% less than Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End in yen, but with the dollar being so weak right now, the fourth voyage for Jack Sparrow increased by 16% over it's predecessor in USD. The film attracted almost 1 million people (986,455 admissions) over the weekend.
Dropping to second place this weekend was Black Swan. The film was down 32.8% from it's opening, to gross an estimated 180 million yen ($2.20 million) this weekend.
Gaku continues to see great success, with box office revenue now exceeding 1 billion yen ($12.5 million) after three weeks in release.
Reaching new milestones this weekend were Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence and Gantz: Perfect Answer.
Detective Conan exceeded 2.5 million admissions, bring it's six week sum to nearly 3 billion yen ($36.6 million), while Gantz hits 2 million admissions crossing 2.5 billion yen ($30.5 million) after five weeks.
And since the latest Pirates of the Caribbean opened on a record amount of 3D screens, Gulliver's Travels plummets almost 80% falling out of the Top 10.
This allowed The King's Speech to achieve 13 consecutive weeks now in the Top 10, and for Hayabusa: Back to the Earth to move up one spot to reach the Top 10.
