Russia and CIS: May 5-8, Results

Fast Five pinned first place with $5.18M, showing fairly modest drop for such large release. This clearly demonstrates the strength of positive word of mouth. So weak fourth part of the racing franchise crashed by 75% in  the second weekend. The film from director Justin Lin already earned $22.47 M, which exceeds the total of the previous part on the $8 million. By next weekend, Fast Five should be the highest-grossing film this year in Russia (Rio is currently $24.23M).

The fantastic action movie Priest with Paul Bettany gained for two days $3.17M, which corresponds to launch Legion, which for the first four days took $4.27M. And against the backdrop of disappointing debuts in Spain ($1.80M and third place) and Britain ($0.65 M and eighth place), this result looks very solid. In addition to the traditional Russian love of this genre, the success has contributed to an active advertising campaign, which includes the arrival of the film's team for the premiere in Moscow.

Thor gently down to third place with 49% drop, despite the release direct 3D-competitor. After two weekends in Russia, Marvel Comics has $12.91M. This is more Rango, Salt and Robin Hood.

The romantic comedy Something Borrowed located on the fourth place with $1.03M, beating much more widely represented Hanna and The Citadel. This result is quite standard for the genre without bright stars. For comparison, in worldwide box office Australia brought  $1.82M, United Kingdom - $1.16M.

Hanna is the widest release of an independent company "Volga", but not the most successful movie. The first weekend brought a relatively weak $0.95M. Indie action movie from Joe Wright about a girl-killer, by and large, did not attract a wider audience.

But the real failure was premiere of the military drama "Burnt by the Sun 2: The Citadel" (http://kino-n-sport.ru/repository/calendar/film/filmid/723) - only $0.70M on 570 screens. This is the second part of the sequel to the Oscar-winning film (1994) by Nikita Mikhalkov and it was in 5.7 times weaker than the first one ($3.74M, 1079 screens) which appeared exactly a year ago. Such an outcome is explained not only by the negative reviews, but absolutely littered the advertising company. Even the minimum promotional materials that were available, had a rather unsavory character.
