The live-action adaptation of Ishidzuka Shinichi's popular manga, "Gaku", managed to debut in first place this weekend by a comfortable margin.  The film attracted 208,116 people to gross an estimated 265 million yen  ($3.3 million)  on 315 screens.

It's a strong start that should result in a total above 1 billion yen ($12 million) by the end of the month.

Dropping to second place this weekend was Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence.

Since it's release on April 16th, the film has brought in more than 2 million admissions to exceed 2.5 billion yen ($31 million).   An eventual gross of 3 billion yen and $40 million USD (a new record for the franchise in USD) is all but assured now.

Also dropping a spot this weekend in it's third weekend of release was Gantz Part II: Perfect Answer.  The sequel was a very popular choice throughout Golden Week, with a new total exceeding 2 billion yen ($25 million).

The second debut this weekend was the "new" Liam Neeson film, "Unknown", which grossed a mediocre estimated 58 million yen ($750,000).

New releases this coming week include, Black Swan (05/11), Kenka Bancho: Ichinen Senso (05/14), and Inferno Fun House (05/14).

Yo JP, just a general question about Japan BO: What's the highest gross ever been, domestic or foreign picture, in Japan?

Spirited Away grossed ¥30.4 billion JPY, which was the approx. the equivalent of $234 million USD in 2001/2002. In 2010, ¥30.4 billion JPY would equal $390 million USD!

And if curious, Titanic is still the highest grossing foreign film at ¥25.9 billion JPY ($202 million in 1997/1998; $325 million in 2010).
